Toward Castle is situated in the grounds of and is often confused with nearby Castle Toward, a large neo-Gothic "castle" built in 1820. About a mile after the lighthouse junction watch out for a driveway off to the right which is one of its entrances. The gate is, however, locked and so drive on for another 350 yards/320 metres.
The road curves to the right after the driveway and then bends again to the left. Look out immediately for a small parking spot on the left. Pull in there and get the walking shoes or boots on.
How to get to Toward Castle
On the other side of the road you will see an old gate and the start of the route up through the trees towards the old castle. A path of sorts has been created by the feet that have passed and so it is uneven. It could be a bit overgrown and will often be wet.
After about 6 miles/10 kms, keep right on the main road past the turn off to Toward lighthouse
The first part of the walk takes you up through the trees to the driveway, the start of which you saw in passing on the road. Turn left when you reach it and then take the pathway branching off to the right. Follow it and you arrive the castle. From the road, it is a walk of approximately 400 yards / 366 metres.
