3.00 pm Afternoon Tea
We return to the Queen's Hall for the family ceilidh, a relaxed and informal social evening with music and poetry and dancing featuring ourselves but with help from friends from the local community, chiefly two members of the renowned Inverhooley Ceilidh Band. (You will be dancing to the full band on Saturday night.) Be sure to let us know on your booking form if you can contribute a song, a story, a poem, a dance, an instrumental piece, some stand-up comedy or whatever would add to the evening's entertainment And we will look to everyone to join in a singalong - words will be provided!. A light supper is included and as it is the open hunting season there could be haggis on the menu. There will be a cash/card bar.

FRIDAY 22ND AUGUST
Today you go on your choice of excursion to a place of interest. 9.00 am departure for each. The evening is free but the not-to-be missed Castle House Museum will be open especially be open especially for us from 7 - 9 pm.
Excursion A: Dunoon - Tighnabruaich - Ardlamont House - Kilfinan Church - Dunoon via Glendaruel
The route follows the A815 from Dunoon through Sandbank and the Holy Loch on the right before turning westwards on to the B836 which takes us round the head of Loch Striven and on to join the A886 briefly before turning off on to the A8003 towards Tighnabruaich. We pause at the Loch Ruel viewpoint to take in the stunning views down Loch Ruel and the Kyles of Bute.
Passing through Tighnabruaich and Kames, we take the route down the shore of the Kyles to Ardlamont House which became the seat of the Lamonts after the 1646 massacre. The current Ardlamont House was built in 1820 for the 19th Clan Chief, Major General John Lamont and has now evolved into stylish self-catering holiday apartments. As such, we are not able to view the interior of the house but will spend some time here enjoying a wander in the grounds.
Moving on, we make our way northward to Kilfinan on the Loch Fyne side of Cowal for the main focus of the trip, a visit to the pre-Reformation Kilfinan Church the ancient burial place of the Lamont Chiefs. There is a well presented vault displaying old stonework including an 11th century cross. A soup and sandwich lunch prepared by local volunteers in the village hall is included.
We return to Dunoon via Glendaruel, dropping in to Otter Ferry for a quick look if time allows.

Excursion B. Dunoon -Lachlan Bay via Glendaruel - Walk by Castle Lachlan to Old Castle Lachlan and Kilmorie Chapel - Strachur - Dunoon via Loch Eck.
We start off on the A815 from Dunoon through Sandbank with the Holy Loch on the right, turning westwards on to the B836 round the head of Loch Striven and on to join the A886. We head north towards Strachur through Clachan of Glendaruel. About 3 miles from Strachur, we cut back on the B8000 to Lachlan Bay for a walk past Castle Lachlan to Old Castle Lachlan and Kilmorie Chapel.
We return to the main road and carry on northwards to Strachur for a soup and sandwich lunch in the Strachur Memorial Hall and in the afternoon, a visit to the Old Smiddy, an 18th Century blacksmith's shop. It can take only small groups at a time and so there will also be an opportunity to take a look round the village as well.
We journey directly back to Dunoon by the A815 along the eastern shore of Loch Eck.

Excursion C: Inveraray - Town and Castle
We head north from Dunoon on the A815 along the banks of Loch Eck to the eastern shore of Loch Fyne where we are only about 5 miles from our destination - as the seagull flies that is. But this is the west of Scotland where sea lochs cut fjord-like into the land adding miles to many a journey and we have to carry on up the eastern shore of Loch Fyne to its head before turning back down the other side to the picturesque town of Inveraray. Here we will visit Inveraray Castle, the family home of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll and have free time to explore the town. You could even end up in the jail ..... but not for any misdemeanour. The well preserved jail and courthouse form an interesting museum. We haven't organised lunch as there is a good choice of places to eat in the town - including a tearoom in the Castle managed, it is said, by the Duchess, although it's unlikely she'll be pouring your tea. Too busy in the scullery washing the dishes, maybe?
Note
We originally planned a visit to the Auchindrain Folk Museum but it is unfortunately closed at the moment (we hope temporarily) because of funding difficulties. We will restore the visit to the programme as an optional alternative to visiting Inveraray Castle if the museum is able to re-open this coming season.

The Castle House Museum
The Castle House Museum will be open from 7 - 9pm especially for us.
SATURDAY 23RD AUGUST
Today there is a choice of local visits: Historic Kilmun or Benmore Botanic Gardens, In the evening, we hold our Anniversary Dinner and Ceilidh.
Kilmun Church stands on a site that has been a centre of Christianity for over fifteen hundred years. The Lamont connection dates back to the 13th century when Duncan Laumon granted Kilmun Church with its land and patronage to Paisley Abbey in 1236. This was at a time when the Lamonts were dominant in Cowal. Later the Church became the spiritual home of the powerful Clan Campbell to the extent that attached to the building is a mausoleum, the burial place of Marquesses and Dukes of Argyll. Next to the present building are the ruins of Kilmun Tower, a symbol of further Lamont involvement when during the civil wars of the 17th century, the Lamonts, on the royalist side, conducted a brutal campaign throughout Campbell-held Cowal, killing and destroying with a savagery all too common in those times. The campaign ended with the destruction of Kilmun village and the church, leaving only the tower standing. It proved a fatal mistake as it led to a vicious Campbell reprisal culminating in the sacking of Toward and Ascog Castles and the infamous Dunoon Massacre of 1646.
These days the Church with the Tower, its historically interesting churchyard, the Campbell mausoleum and a fine interior featuring one of the only two remaining organs in Scotland powered by water offers an interesting visit. Here we will enjoy a talk from Bob Reid, co-author of A History of the Clan Lamont, a guided tour, a short organ recital and a snack lunch.

Benmore Botanic Gardens
Benmore is one of the four notable gardens of the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, the other three being Edinburgh, Dawyck near Peebles in the Scottish Borders and Logan in Dumfries and Galloway. You can get a flavour of what Benmore has to offer here and here.
The gardens are situated 6.5 miles/ 10.5 kms north of Dunoon on the A815 on land once owned by James Lamont who bought it in 1849. It was bought with money gained from his sugar plantation in Trinidad and it has to be acknowledged that his fortune was tainted by its origins in slavery. He was responsible for creating Benmore House as we now see it but could never have envisaged its current usage as an outdoor centre. James's nephew later sold the estate since which time it has passed through several owners.
9.30 am.
2.30 pm.
We aim to return to Dunoon from the visits by 2.30 and to leave time in the afternoon free to give you a break before the dinner and ceilidh in the evening. It is another opportunity to visit the Castle House Museum which will be remaining opening for an extra hour to 5 pm

Anniversary Dinner and Ceilidh
It's back to the Queen's Hall for the centre-piece of the Gathering, our annual dinner and ceilidh which this year is in celebration of the 130th anniversary of the Clan Lamont Society. Dinner will be three courses with wine and coffee to finish. The music for our entertainment and dancing will be provided again by the renowned Inverhooley Ceilidh Band. The dances will be explained and we will walk through each one before we set off on its 256 bar whirl. There will be a cash/card bar.
This is a black tie event and we hope that as far as possible the men will be in highland dress and that the ladies will wear a tartan sash or some other tartan accessory.
